Hello San Diego!

Thankfully, Covid cases in San Diego continue to fall, but please continue to be conscientious when attending events (particularly indoor events) to protect yourself and the people you may encounter. Also, be aware that numerous venues still have specific requirements regarding vaccination and masking.

This weekend, there will be 4 performances of The Wiz by Teatro San Diego at Diversionary Theater.

Tonight (Friday), the Beatles vs. Stones musical shoot-out featuring tribute bands Abbey Road and Jumpin' Jack Flash returns to the Belly Up.

Saturday and Sunday, English comedian Jack Whitehall will perform at the American Comedy Company.

Saturday, the 6th Annual Festival of Books will take place at University of San Diego. The Chinese Historical Museum will present an online talk by Allie Arnell entitled Dragons, Phoenix, and other Symbols in the Art of China. The Summer Shakes Performance Workshop will continue at Liberty Station. The House of Chamorros will hold their Annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages in Balboa Park. At Heritage County Park, Write Out Loud will present their 13th Annual TwainFest, a day of readings and related activities to pay tribute to the works and life of Mark Twain. For the Little Italy film series in Amici Park, the comedy The Leisure Seeker will be shown. The film is in English but directed by Italian filmmaker Paolo Virzì.

Sunday, Tracy Lee Nelson, Luiseño/Diegueño/Kumeyaay singer-songwriter from the La Jolla Reservation will perform at the La Jolla Historical Society. Rounding out next week's events, the Gipsy Kings will perform at the Rady Shell.

Tuesday, Coco will be shown at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Wednesday, Warwick's will host Jesse Leon as he discusses his new book, I'm Not Broken: A Memoir.

Thursday, at Mic Drop Comedy, there will be a Colombian Comedy Night featuring a number of Colombian comedians. The classic film Ninotchka, starring Greta Garbo, will be shown at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. Latino comedian Jesus Sepulveda will perform at the Laugh Factory.

Next Friday and Saturday, Margret Cho will perform at Mic Drop Comedy.

Next Saturday, Warwick's will host Frances Mayes as she discusses her new book, A Place in the World: Finding the Meaning of Home. The Summer Shakes Performance Workshop continues at Liberty Station. UKE-CON Summer Ukulele Festival at the Encore Event Center will feature numerous ukulele performances, workshops, games and more. The 1st Kalaman African Vibe Festival will take place at Simmons Family Park in San Marcos. Regional Mexican band Grupo Firme will perform at Petco Park. At Los Penasquitos Ranch House, professor John Hildebrand will deliver a talk on Submerged Prehistoric Sites. The animated Disney film Moana will be shown at the Mingei. The Little Italy Summer Film Series will continue at Amici Park with a screening of the classic film Per Un Pugno di Dollari (A Fistful of Dollars) starring Clint Eastwood.

Next Sunday, the House of Hungary will hold its annual Lawn Program. Suman Nayak will be performing a solo Bharatanatyam Dance Concert at Rancho Bernardo High School. Mexican pop performer Pepe Aguilar will perform at the Pechanga Arena. And rounding out next week the Young Dubliners will perform at the Belly Up.

Cross-cultural/international-themed theatrical offerings in San Diego include Here Are the Blueberries (ends Sunday) at La Jolla Playhouse's Potiker, A Midsummers Night's Dream at the Old Globe, As You Like It at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Point Loma, and Cabaret at the Cygnet Theatre in Old Town.
